Curriculum shake-up ‘aligns Victoria with best practices

"This decision will empower educators with the tools and training necessary to deliver structured and effective reading instruction, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
The removal of balanced literacy from our schools signifies a bold and necessary step towards rectifying past educational shortcomings and aligns Victoria with best practices in literacy education worldwide."

“Heidi Gregory, founder of community group Dyslexia Victoria Support (DVS), has spent years driving a campaign for evidence-aligned reading practice to be a given in all Victorian schools.
In 2022, she was successful in getting two documents supporting the discredited literacy intervention program Reading Recovery removed from the Department’s website, but said at the time there was evidence to show around 285 Victorian schools still promoted or used the program and/or discredited levelled literacy interventions.
“Dyslexia Victoria Support never thought this day would come.”
2023 - The Age
The ‘hopeless’ phonics test failing Victorian students but costing millions

"“[English Online Interview] is just a tick and flick for them,” she said. “Basically, nothing’s changed. Even though the government made promises to move into a more evidence-based space, we see no evidence of it and the teachers think it’s an utter waste of time.”
Backlash over ‘cynical’ Victorian phonics assessment

“And 40-item versions have been used in South Australia and New South Wales, and that's what Dyslexia Victoria Support was advocating for… Something that samples adequately across the grapheme-phoneme correspondence that beginning learners need to be showing mastery of.”

2022 - Education HQ 'Long time coming': Vic Govt shuns Reading Recovery program

"The feedback that we were getting, and in my personal [opinion], is that with those two documents sitting on the [Department’s] website, it was seen as an endorsement of the Reading Recovery program”
